The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has resulted in more than 1 million deaths within 9 months. Although all Australians have been affected, the pandemic has differentially affected older people, who have experienced higher mortality rates. From late February/early March 2020, government health advice encouraged older people to self-isolate (wherever possible) to reduce the risk of exposure to the virus.
Queensland has fared reasonably well (to date) in comparison to some Australian states, with relatively low cases and deaths. Despite this, the social and economic impacts have been widespread and it is likely that a number of stressors related to the pandemic have increased the risk of abuse for older people.
This exploratory research study sought to examine early indications of how factors related to COVID-19 may have increased the risk of particular types of abuse for older people.
