Closing the Gaps: Enhancing South Australia’s Response to the Abuse of Vulnerable Older People

The Office of the Public Advocate, and the University of South Australia, worked with people in the sector to prepare a comprehensive review of rights based adult protection strategies, based on overseas evidence.

Although funded to look at elder abuse prevention and response, the same principles can be applied to the practice of adult protection across the age range.

A draft government wide safeguarding policy was written for consideration.

This work subsequently influenced the development of a rights based elder abuse prevention strategy for South Australia.

The report was released on the 14th June 2012, World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, Jby ohn Hill MP, Minister for Health and Ageing and tabled in the SA Parliament on that day.
